Many things in Fallout are inspired by real-world events. Case in point: In 1966, residents of Point Pleasant, West Virginia reported sightings of a “large flying man with ten-foot wings” and eyes that “glowed red”.
Believed to be the portent of tragedy (including the collapse of the Silver Bridge which killed 46 people), the Mothman cemented itself as a staple in American folklore. It is now the subject of a festival, a museum and a massive metallic statue.
In the alternate timeline that is Fallout, the Mothman is a cryptid that players can encounter and fight. And its statue looks like this:
Is he man, moth, or myth? If you could ask the followers of Fallout’s Cult of the Mothman, they’d tell you that he is their savior. They’d be overjoyed to catch a glimpse of his insectile face, let alone gaze into his big red eyes and the infinite cosmic wisdom they hold. Given the chance, they would fall at his bird-like feet.
In the words of one notable worshipper, the Mothman is “more like us than the unknowable horrors in the peripheral vision of our subconscious minds.” Perhaps that’s why the creature has the body of a man. But its arms end in wingtips, instead of fingertips.
This mythical mix of human, bird, and insect boasts a level of craftsmanship that makes it look like its made of metal with realistic textures, colors, and weathering. The closer you look, the more intricate details you discover.
